The story of an African farm

Situated in the heart of the Karoo, Samara Private Game Reserve is so magical, we were tempted to move in, Louis Vuitton suitcases and all.

Samara game reserve is the perfect getaway from city chaos. Lying in the heart of vast open plains, characterized by 5-star farm-style charm, is South Africa’s best kept secret. From the moment you arrive at Samara, the worries of the world seem far-away. The space, silence and stars of the Karoo are what safari-inspired Hollywood movies are made of. Aside from the breathtaking landscape, Samara’s Manor House puts traditional safari accommodation to shame. The open, modern African inspired villa is the perfect place to relax, clear your mind and reconnected with nature. The best part about Samara? You don’t have to lift a finger! The staff and amenities of the reserve cater to your every need.

Guests are ushered into their new abode with welcome drinks, gourmet food aplenty and a view to make any ex-pat weep for the motherland. Your eye is drawn through the glass double doors flanked by beaded African artwork and traditional Karoo antiques to the breathtaking views beyond. The Karoo mountain landscape unfolds over a 21m infinity pool (perfect for morning laps post-game drive), descending to a waterhole frequently visited by buffalo, warthogs and monkeys.

Your days start with an early morning game drive in the fresh Karoo air (the perfect way to work up an appetite before a hearty breakfast). Although not a Big 5 reserve, Samara is famous and respected around South Africa for being at the forefront of cheetah conservation. Starting with just three individuals, Samara’s cheetah conservation programme has been a huge success. In the absence of competition from lions or hyaenas, the Samara cheetah population has flourished to such an extent that offspring born on the property have been made available to other conservation areas, from national parks to private reserves. Their cheetah population was what made our stay especially magical. The reserve offers guests the opportunity to track cheetah on foot, something no other reserve we have ever stayed at offers. Our tracking experience found us at the top of the Condoa Mountain overlooking the breathtaking plains of the Camdeboo.

Another incredible experience offered at Samara is the world famous ‘Milky Way’ star bed. This life changing experience offers guests the opportunity to sleep under the stars (in 5 star luxury, of course). The star bed platform comprises of handmade four-poster king sized bed with draped mosquito net. A small seating/dining area looks out over the river. This is the perfect place to celebrate a romantic stay with your partner.

Samara is also geared for bespoke activities from dinner under the stars, picnics, mountain hikes, birding and conservation activities. With an array of cheetah, giraffe, rhino and aardvark, Samara is the perfect place to experience the magic of South Africa (but good luck getting rid of us because we’d love to stay).
