She’s South Africa’s Jen Atkin and when it comes to blondes, they always seem to find her. Ginger Hair’s co-owner, Jenna, shy’s away from the term ‘celeb stylist’ but when her client list includes Arianna Huffington, Gina Myers and Roxy Burger it’s obvious why this downtown earth hair guru is esteemed for being at the forefront of ‘what’s next’ in hair trends.
Working from her dream salon, which she co-owns with Kelly Fernandes, Jenna describes Sandton’s Ginger Hair as home, thus the main reason why her clients keep coming back. It’s in this laidback, no-nonsense salon that magic is made. The team (which has not changed since the salon opened two years ago) has become like family, playing off each other’s strengths. Jenna and Kelly are the boss ladies who aside from being able to do anything, kill it in the blonde department. French import, Enrique is the king of balayage with a ‘je ne sais quoi’ that makes him a hot commodity with lady clients. Throw in the resident barber, Ashley, and Elaine, known as the ‘colour fixer’ and extension maestro and Ginger has a team able to attend to your every need.
Jenna’s trick to keeping blonde hair fresh and free from those brassy tones? Putting only blonde in her clients’ hair. The moment you add a dark shade is when the hair turns from a fresh white to a copper orange. Ginger, which is the only System Professional stocked salon in Sandton, is the perfect place for females young or old who want to be on trend. Our favourite thing about it? The fact that this salon, known for being the best at what they do, is perhaps the most down to earth place we’ve visited. We kicked back with coffee and a vogue and found ourselves chatting to every member of staff who walked past.
Jenna’s hair predictions for 2018? The Lob (Long bob) as well as sombre (stuttle ombre) because girls are wanting their hair to look more and more natural. It’s a no brainer that we will be back to have our locks attended to by the best in the business throughout 2018 and beyond.
