Old world charm

Kurland Hotel is our favourite Garden Route getaway… and word on the street? They have the best scones.

Located near the picturesque beach resorts of Plettenberg Bay, in the heart of the Garden Route, Kurland Hotel is the perfect 5-star hangout for couples and families alike. Whether your priority is horse-riding, incredible food or living in the lap of luxury, Kurland covers all bases and is the perfect place to check into for a week of spa treatments, afternoon teas, siestas and romantic candle-lit dinners.

The hotel is a perfect marriage of old world charm enhanced by modern sophistication. From the moment you arrive at the Kurland, tea is served in silver wear and your Champagne is always iced. The outdoor veranda is the perfect place to sit and enjoy your high tea while watching horses idly grazing in the fields before you. Kurland’s high teas are famous along the Garden Route for serving their delicious scones. Guests come from far and wide to sample this famous afternoon treat.

The charm of Kurland Hotel lies in its décor. From check in we were looking forward to turndown in our French inspired suites, furnished from family heirlooms and objets d’art discovered at international fairs such as Maison & Objet in Paris and Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan. Sumptuous fabrics were sourced from the latest fabric trends from St Leger & Viney and original artwork from the owners of Kurland Hotel – this private collection graces the walls. It’s no wonder the hotel achieved a space in Tattler Magazine’s ‘101 Best Hotels of the World’ List for three consecutive years.

Aside from the beauty of the décor, the beauty of total relaxation is perhaps the drawing card for time poor visitors.  Time is of no consequence at Kurland and guests set their own pace. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are at leisure and the staff is always on hand to make sure your every whim is attended to. For action seekers, Kurland offers running trails, 1st class equestrian facilities and quad-bikes for exploring the pristine 700 hectare property. Add their incredible Spa (literally the best massages we’ve had in years) and it’s no wonder guests return time and time again.

Kurland is consistently rated as one of the best Hotels in the world and regarded as simply the most desirable address on the Garden Route. Their location, amenities and décor are not the only reasons.  Fine cuisine, created by the talented Executive Chef, with an emphasis on fresh, organic herbs and vegetables grown on the property, can be enjoyed in a variety of locations throughout the Estate and make meal times the highlight of the day.

The surrounding area, including the Tsitsikamma Nature Reserve, offers a multitude of family activities such as forest walks, pristine beaches, water sports e.g. surfing or scuba diving, whale and dolphin watching,  several links golf courses to choose from and even extreme activities such as bungee jumping or sky diving.

It’s no wonder Kurland Hotel is ideal for celebrities requiring total privacy from the ever watchful eyes of the ‘paparazzi’. Security is tailored to the client’s personal requirements and it has played host to numerous celebrities who have chosen the Estate for specifically this reason.

* Travel tip : Guests have the option to fly into George Airport or take a truly breathtaking drive from Cape Town stopping at quaint villages and towns en route such as Wilderness and Knysna.
