Gorah – The Queen of Glamping

Nestled in the hills of Addo Elephant National Park sits Gorah Elephant Camp, a 5-star ‘campfari’ that is so luxurious we didn’t even mind sleeping in tents.

There is nothing more beautiful than waking up to the sunrise across the plains of Addo from the comfort of a luxury tent – Egyptian cotton sheets et al. Oh, and you can share your moment ‘in the bush’ on Instagram, of course, because what would five-star glamping be without in- tent WiFi? See what we mean when we say Gorah is our kind of camping?

Passports & Pérignon have been on copious amounts of safaris but none have matched the luxury and novelty of Gorah. Tents on stilts make up the rooms at Gorah, each decked with the finest colonial furnishings. Leather ‘sink-into-me’ chairs overlooking zebra, elephants and buck complement the chic G&T mini-bars in each room but don’t be fooled into thinking you’ll have the time to sit idly and enjoy your rose-flavoured drink. From the moment you arrive at Gorah, fine cuisine is on the menu. High tea is a daily ritual at the lodge, where traditional milk tart is enjoyed on the colonial wrap around verandah overlooking the prize positioned waterhole. Enjoying afternoon tea is often accompanied by buffalo, buck, zebra or lion joining in the festivities at the waterhole after another hot day in Africa.

Just when you’ve gorged yourself silly on pastries and Earl Grey (yes, it’s that posh darling) your ranger calls for the highlight of every guests stay – the game drive. Departing daily at around 4.30 pm, guests settle in with their ponchos, blankets and hot-water bottles (See, five star!) for the trip of a lifetime. Rushing through the plains of Africa, prepare to be mesmerized by the Big 5 in all their glory. If you weren’t looking forward to the hot Gluehwein and cracking fires waiting for you at the lodge, you would wish your African adventure would carry on into the early hours of the night.

Dinner is just as much of a fare as all other meals at the camp. Comprising of a three course meal, wine, romantic candlelight and couples gazing lovingly into each other’s eyes, it’s obvious to see why Gorah is the perfect spot for a romantic getaway, anniversary or babymoon.

We headed back to our rooms, exhausted, mesmerized and ready for our 6 am wake-up call and our date with the plains. While the other guests slept around us, we crept out onto our decks, looked up at the stars and envied those that got to call Gorah, home.
