Does Dermapen work? How a skeptic became a believer

Cautious to give it a try, our editor entered the ‘Dermapen members club’ and here’s why this skeptic became a believer.

The thought of needles piercing my skin to remove scarring, fine lines or pigmentation was a far stretch for my imagination but after reading about the hype surrounding a Dermapen treatment, I finally left my doubts at the door of Lightsculpt aesthetic clinic and gave this treatment a bash, in the hopes of treating acne scars on my forehead. At this point, I was in a state of utter desperation. I had tried everything, from over the counter remedies to seeing countless of Joburg’s best dermatologists. Yet despite my best efforts, nothing, and I mean nothing, had worked. Given my history with my skin I didn’t want to get my hopes up but somewhere in the back of my mind I was hopeful that this might be the treatment to rid my skin of the horrible reminders of my acne filled post-teens. (For some reason my skin only flared up in my mid-twenties).

From what I understood, the derma pen pierces the skin so that the body can send a warning to the brain that that area needs healing. The body then supplies collagen to that area which allows for healing. The academic explanation for this is that this small, hand-held device delivers up to 1,300 micro punctures per second into the skin, thus stimulating the production of collagen and elastin and normalizing various skin functions.

And while I was expecting pain during my treatment ,I hardly felt any. Within 10 minutes my entire face had been treated and all that was left for me to do was to go home and wait a day or two before I could apply make-up. The real results only appeared about ten days later when my skin had healed and I could finally see the results of my first treatment (depending on the severity of one’s skin up to six treatments are recommended).

Although my scarring has not completely disappeared, I am beyond thrilled that it has improved up to 40% within one treatment! Never in my wildest dreams did I expect such incredible results. So it is with much excitement that I eagerly await my next Dermapen treatment.
