We know the world hates Trump … but why? What does it mean to be a woman in the US and why is everyone (and Lady Gaga) always marching?
We’ve all seen on Facebook and Twitter that the world totally hates Trump but why does everyone think he’s such a douche? Well, we’re breaking down the last 365 plus days he’s been in power and what that’s meant for us girls.
A year ago, millions of women marched against then new president, Donald Trump. They wanted to send a message to him that they thought he was an asshole because he was narrow-minded when it came to women’s rights, immigrants and the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender and Queer) community.
Over the last year, women have not stopped marching and organizing, calling on governments to do more to support women’s rights.
Then, this last weekend hundreds of thousands of women took to the streets again to demand that their voice is heard in politics ‘cos 2017 saw an assault on women’s health and their reproductive rights (Trump thinks period talk is gross and he has wanted to limit our access to free pap smears and the pill because he says it’s a waste of government money). SORRY I WAS BORN WITH A VAGINA, DONALD.
Ok, so what exactly has he done during his year in office that offends us so much?
During his first week in office, Trump began issuing executive orders that reversed Obama-era policies (one of them was free abortions for women). His new law that he passed, severely limits NGOs ability to take US funds and then do the work that they need to do on the ground to ensure that women have access to the healthcare they need.
He limited birth control, reproductive medicine and procedures when he announced the Trump administration was expanding protections for doctors and nurses who have a moral or religious objection to performing services like abortion or gender reassignment surgery.
Trump has put people who are also anti-abortion in key government posts. Among the most controversial appointees is Charmaine Yoest, who led the leading anti-abortion rights group ‘Americans United for Life’ for seven years. People got really angry when those in power tried to block a 17-year-old rape survivor and other immigrant teens in federal detention from getting an abortion, *Check google for proof*, thus forcing them to have the babies of their rapists. “I think it just signaled a very clear intent on the part of President Trump and his administration to systematically go after women’s health, women’s rights and dismantle the system that we have in place to ensure that all people have access to the reproductive healthcare that they need,” the Center for Reproductive Rights’ Friedrich-Karnik said in a statement to the media.
He wants to get rid of Obamacare!!! Republicans, backed by Trump, have so far been unsuccessful in their multiple attempts to repealthe Affordable Care Act, commonly called ‘Obamacare’. Women’s health advocates have expressed grave concern over the implications of such a move. One of the most important pieces of the Affordable Care Act was ensuring that certain types of healthcare were required to be covered, whether it was contraception or whether it was maternity care. They have said they aim to defund Planned Parenthood for at least a year and eliminated guaranteed coverage for pre-existing conditions. (FYI, People don’t only visit Planned Parenthood for abortions. Some of us go for pap smears, the pill and counseling).
So while some (perhaps a handful) march for the right to getting an abortion at planned parenthood (post rape or otherwise), the majority of us stand in solidarity for those who march for their right to the other services they provide, which include; Contraception, HIV testing and counselling, morning after pills, STD testing, STD treatment, STD vaccines, cancer screenings, pelvic exams, pregnancy checkups and more.
